On the Road to Sustainability: From Research to Practice ransportation systems around the world are facing tremendous challenges that are economic, environmental and social in nature. In the United States, two key issues are becoming large drivers of policy changes and debate. First, global warming threatens our fragile environment. Policymakers, researchers and the public are increasingly looking to the transportation sector to reduce its impact. Second, the primary federal funding source for transportation, the Highway Trust Fund, will have a significant shortfall in just two years. Creative financing and demand management strategies are needed to sustain high quality transportation infrastructure and services

The widespread deployment of in-vehicle driver information systems and the emergence of advanced driver assistance systems are profoundly transforming road transport. Through these Intelligent Transport Systems, a range of services are offered to the driver with the objective of facilitating the driving task and improving travel safety. Nevertheless, these developments raise numerous questions about acceptability by drivers and their impact on drivers’ behaviour and attitudes. All this argues for encouraging a Human Centred Design approach, in which ITS are designed according to driver needs and are not driven by technological capabilities. That is the reason why the HUMANIST Network of Excellence is organising a conference on this topic.

The objective of the PEPPER project is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the police enforcement of road traffic. The project looks critically at all relevant aspects of enforcement, such as target behaviours, the detection of infringements, administrative and legal handling after infringement, decisions concerning the volume, location and timing of enforcement, effects of enforcement on road user behaviour and accidents, enforcement methods and tools, collection of enforcement data, and enforcement in the social context. Speeding, drink driving and use of seat belts are especially targeted. The need for improved enforcement data and better understanding of the impacts is recognised, and the potential of innovative technologies in the different links of the enforcement chain is studied. The work is organised in five work packages (WP).

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) is pleased to host the 9th Annual International Alcohol Interlock Symposium in partnership with Vägverket, the Swedish Road Administration. The Symposium is scheduled for August 24th - 26th, 2008, at the Dalecarlia Hotel in Tällberg, Sweden. The focus of the symposium represents a logical extension from previous years. Prior symposia underscored that interlocks are effective in reducing DWI recidivism. Despite this fact, interlocks are seriously under-utilised as a prevention measure. There is a need to ensure that offenders have interlocks installed on their vehicle and that they participate in a program of monitoring and supervision.

Time series analysis can be used to quantitatively describe, explain, and predict road safety developments. Time series analysis techniques offer the possibility of quantitatively modelling road safety developments in such a way that the dependencies between the observations of time series data are taken into account. This two-day workshop presents and discusses the functionality of regression, ARIMA, and state space models for the analysis of time series. Both theory and practice (with computer software) will be presented. The focus will be on the practical application of these models to the analysis of road safety data.

The second road safety day, to be held in 2008, will address the subject of "Road Safety in our Cities". As mentioned in the Commission Green Paper "Towards a new culture for urban mobility", adopted on 25 September 2007, "one of the next European road safety days could focus on urban areas". Indeed about two thirds of the accidents and one third of the road fatalities occur in urban areas and affect the most vulnerable road users.

Ziel 4.

The European Network for Child Friendly Cities and the Child in the City Foundation are co-operating on this conference, which focuses on two themes. The conference will discuss the theme of child-friendliness on a small scale: the Child Friendly Communities. Children can have an overview of this scale, which moreover enables a co-operation of a variety of partners which is easier to realise than on the level of the municipality. The second theme will offer an answer to a question that has been asked several times at the former conferences: when can a city be called a child friendly city, or what are the Points of Reference for Child Friendly Cities.

As a premiere, the annual conference of the European Association for Accident Research and Analysis (EVU) will be hosted in France. More than ever, the focus of this conference is on practical issues found in the daily work of the reconstructionist throughout Europe. Evenmore than theory, the practical aspects will be tackled in the papers dealing with new aspects in accident reconstruction. A particular glance will emphasise on VRU (Vulnerable Road Users)and their collision mechanics. Two other sections will cover road-tyre interaction and lowspeed collisions. For the first time in the EVU’s history, a free forum will cover hot topics relevant to reconstructionists: electronics, pieces of evidence, psychology and more. In order to ensure the quality of the conference, simultaneous translation into 3 languages (English, French and German) will be offered.
