SARTRE

SARTRE stands for Social Attitudes to Road Risk in Europe. In it, about 1000 driving license holders per country are questioned about their opinions on road safety measures, danger perception in traffic, about road accident causes, their own behaviour and that of other road users, and about their experiences with police surveillance. The most recent study (2002) in 23 countries shows that a large proportion of European drivers are concerned about road safety. For example:

  • Two thirds of all motorists in countries with a limit of 0,5 BAC say they support a lowering of the limit to a uniform one throughout Europe.
  • The majority of the motorists interviewed support using more speed cameras and higher fines for speeding.
  • Overall, 76% of drivers are in favour of greater levels of traffic law enforcement, but this varies from 50 to 90% between countries. Sixty per cent are in favour of more severe penalties for speeding offences and 90% support more severe penalties for drink-driving offences.[55, 30]
