WP 5 – Independent Accident and Injury Databases
Problem to be tackled
There is a limited understanding of fatal road accidents and the causation factors for all types of road accidents, that occur across Europe.
Main goal
To develop a data gathering methodology and recording system with respect to fatal accident data (Task 1) and general accident causation data (Task 2).
Main method
Task 1: To gather and analyze information from police fatal accident reports to understand the characteristics of fatal accidents.
Task 2: To use on the scene/near in time methods to understand causal factors in road accidents.
Important subjects
Good links with the police/insurance companies have been crucial in order to obtain this high level of detail.
Current status
For both Tasks, data collection teams have been training and the methods are currently being piloted, prior to full data collection commencing in Spring 2006.
Products so far
Reports on the methodology have been produced (Deliverables D5.1 and D.52) outlining the processes for information collection.
Future plans
A thorough review of the pilot phase will be conducted prior to full data collection commencing in Spring 2006.
