Definition road safety risk indicator

A risk can be defined as the rate

The road safety outcome is usually the number of accidents or casualties, (fatal accidents, accidents with hospitalised or fatally injured victims, fatalities, persons injured). For special purposes this can be further restricted to a specific period, area, time of day, vehicle types involved, or accident type.

The amount of exposure is mostly selected based on its theoretical importance. However, quite often the preferred exposure measure is not available, or available in an inadequate level of desegregation. In such cases, an alternative exposure measure may be selected.

SafetyNet researchers have first made an state-of-the-art analysis of the theoretical and statistical background, and the needs and uses of road safety risk indicators in EU. They have followed this up with an assessment of the availability, comparability and usability of risk and exposure data in EU member states.
